CARERS WORKSHOP: MAKING SENSE OF PEOPLE'S EATING PROBLEMS

Picture
Workshop Overview: This workshop will take carers on a dynamic exploration of different approaches to making sense of people’s experience of eating problems. Through a collaborative and reflective look at various people’s stories, participants will be invited to consider the various ways to understand these experiences by taking account of the context of the person, their experience in the world, and the meaning the problem might have in their life. This will be an interactive workshop where participants will be encouraged to bring their own ideas or theories of eating problems and will also be provided with an overview of different theoretical perspectives. Rachel will encourage participants to learn from each other and hold a position of all perspectives are valid. The aim is for participants to leave with some new ideas about different ways you might understand the experience of those with eating disorders.

Rachel Barbara-May is a social worker who has worked in for many years in child and youth mental health. For the last 11 years, Rachel has been developing and coordinating the Eating Disorders Program at the Alfred Child and Youth Mental Health Service in Melbourne. This program is now a fully integrated, efficient, effective, and busy eating disorders program that is collaboratively adapted to the needs each family. Rachel is committed to delivering a program that prioritises outcome over model and that utilises practice evidence to ensure that the program is providing responsible and responsive care.
